Vishnu with Garuda Statue: Stone, Bhutan, 19th Century

Vishnu is the maintainer of the universe, born of the right side of the Higher Being. He is the dreamer who’s dream is the universe of existence. He is the invincible protector and preserver of life embodying qualities of goodness and mercy. And this stone carving is powerful, extraordinary - it has a beautiful presence. Here we see Vishnu, carrying instruments of teaching while riding his vehicle deity Garuda (the grand Guardian). The stone is devotionally carved and perhaps a portion of a large altar piece.
